Using Your iMac's OnLine Help

Accessing Help
You may have noticed that your iMac came with very little in the way on instructions/manuals. This is because Apple have decided to put most of its manual on the computer itself. Now, I have come across many of you who prefer to have a printed version to work from. Fear not, all the help files are printable so you can read them at you leisure.
To access the Macintosh Help you must first Make sure you are in the Finder (Finder will be displayed in the top right hand of the screen, clicking on the desktop will make it active. [Huh?]).

Then move the mouse (pointer) to the Help menu at the top of the screen and click. The Help menu will drop below. Scroll through to Mac Help and click once again.

The Help Window (pictured right) will open. This window works in much the same way as a web page. Each item in the left hand list is a link to further information.

If you are a brand new user I recommend that you read all the information under the Basics heading. So, clicking Basics will display a sub menu on the right hand side of the window. Click on one of the right hand heading to read information on that subject.

Navigating Help

There are also some basic navigation buttons located at the top of the window.

The arrow pointing to the left takes you to the previous page and the right pointing arrow moves you to page you have come from. The little house symbol will take you back to the initial menu when clicked.

Searching Help

The Help Window also has a useful search facility. At the top of the window there is a blank field with a button marked search next to it. Move your mouse to the field (the pointer will change to an 'I' character.) and click. You will then see a flashing cursor. This means you can now type in this field. Enter some criteria for your search. When you do this you may not always get the results you are looking for so consider several different words or phrases that are relevant to your search. For example - If you cannot remember how to eject a CD you may want to search under CD or eject, CD ROM, Disk, Drive. Try and use as few words as possible.

The search will display results in the main window. Click on the most relevant to read instructions. The results will be displayed in order of relevance to your keyword.

NB: This information is relevant to only the Mac Help. Each application may have its own help file. This may function in a slightly different way

Printing Help Documents

You may print help docs in the same way you print any other document. Assuming your printer is correctly installed go to the 'File' menu (Whilst the Help application is active) and move the mouse down to Print. Click Print. Depending on which printer you are using a dialogue box will appear offering various options. You will not need to alter any of these settings unless you know what you are doing. To Print simply click the print button (usually located at the top right of the dialogue box)

Macintosh Tutorials

Depending on which iMac and Operating System you are using you may find an item in your Help Menu called 'Mac Tutorials' . These are interactive tutorials teaching you very basic operation of your computer's key functions. When you click Mac Tutorials the by now familiar help window will appear offering you three options. These are Mac OS, Internet and Mac Basics. The latter will take you through to the standard help window detailed above. The first two are interactive guides that will show you key features and skills such as mouse operation and window control. If you are brand new to computers I suggest you work through these and grasp their principles.
